Q1. In stroke play, a player takes relief in the correct relief area. They drop the ball in the correct way, but before striking the ground, the ball hits the player’s foot and then comes to rest in the relief area. They then play the ball as it lies. What is the ruling?

A.      The player gets a two stroke penalty
B.      The player gets a one stroke penalty
C.      There is no penalty

Rule 14.3b(2)
As the ball hit any part of the player’s body or their equipment BEFORE hitting the ground, it should have been re-dropped, but because they played the ball at rest in the relief area, they get a one stroke penalty. For clarity, also see Rule 14.3c(1).

Q2. In stroke play, a player finds their ball embedded in the bank within a Penalty Area. The ball is completely unplayable. Which is the correct option to continue play.

A.      One stroke penalty relief outside the Penalty Area
B.      Free relief outside the Penalty Area
C.      Free relief inside the Penalty Area

Rule 17.3
As the ball is in the Penalty area, there is no free relief for interference from an Abnormal Course Condition, an embedded ball or an unplayable ball. The player’s only relief option is outside the Penalty Area with a one stroke penalty, as per Rule 17.1d.

Q3. In stroke play, a player finds their ball in Ground Under Repair. He decides to play the ball as it lies inside the GUR. What is the ruling?

A.      The player gets a two stroke penalty
B.      The player gets a one stroke penalty
C.      There is no penalty

Rule 16.1
Free relief is allowed from GUR, but you don’t have to take it. You are always permitted to play the ball as it lies within a Ground Under Repair, unless the committee has declared it as a No Play Zone.
